The sale of U.S. defense articles and services to foreign partners is a critical part of efforts to strengthen U.S. security and help promote world peace by increasing U.S. allies’ ability to deter and defend against possible aggression, promoting the sharing of common defense burdens, and fostering regional stability. In fiscal year 2025, direct commercial sales of defense article and services totaled over $225 billion and foreign military sales accounted for over $100 billion. GAO is holding this event to help interested Congressional staff better understand how defense sales work and how recent world events, executive orders, and legislative actions are affecting this vital piece of our national security enterprise.
