GAO reviewed the Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) new rule on federal motor vehicle safety standards, electronic stability control systems controls and displays. GAO found that (1) the final rule requires electronic stability control on all passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses with a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 Kg (10,000 pounds) or less; and (2) NHTSA complied with the applicable requirements in promulgating the rule.
