Medicare: Control Over Fraud and Abuse Remains Elusive

GAO discussed the problem of fraud and abuse in the Medicare program, focusing on: (1) the anti-fraud-and-abuse tools available to Medicare; (2) the extent to which and how effectively they are used by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA); and (3) recent legislative activity aimed at improving program safeguards.
