Highlights

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on unobligated surface transportation funding available for congressional rescission. GAO noted that: (1) about $409,000 in unobligated funding could be rescinded; (2) the Federal Highway Administration originally reported $8.8 million in unobligated funds, but $8.4 million of that amount was erroneously reported because the Department of Transportation does not routinely update its fiscal management information system; and (3) as of December 31, 1995, five states had unobligated balances that ranged from $1,831 to $306,278.
