Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the overall condition of the monuments at Vicksburg National Military Park, focusing on the cost estimates for replacing or repairing monuments in poor condition. GAO noted that: (1) most of the 640 monuments at Vicksburg are in good or fair condition and need no repair or rehabilitation; (2) 2 of the monuments at Vicksburg are in poor condition and need substantial repair; and (3) National Park Service officials estimate that it could cost more than $1 million to repair one of the monuments and $3,200 to $4,000 to repair the other monument.
