GAO provided information on its strategic plan, focusing on its: (1) support of Congress' oversight and legislative needs; and (2) internal operations. GAO identified five broad areas of concentration in supporting the oversight and legislative needs of Congress, which include: (1) promoting an efficient and cost effective government; (2) exposing waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement; (3) targeting spending reductions to reduce the federal deficit; (4) improving federal effectiveness through strengthened accountability and a focus on results; and (5) identifying trends with fiscal, budgetary or oversight consequences for the government. In addition, GAO identified four priorities which are essential to its internal operations, which include: (1) understanding the needs of Congress; (2) improving quality; (3) developing and maintaining a skilled workforce; (4) using technology.
