GAO provided information on its strategic plan, focusing on its: (1) support of Congress' oversight and legislative needs; and (2) internal operations. GAO identified five broad areas of concentration in supporting the oversight and legislative needs of Congress, which include: (1) promoting a more efficient and cost-effective government; (2) exposing waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement; (3) targeting spending reductions to reduce the federal deficit; (4) improving accountability through financial and information management; and (5) identifying trends with fiscal, budgetary, or oversight consequences for the government. In addition, GAO identified four priorities which are essential to its internal operations, which include: (1) ensuring congressional satisfaction in terms of timeliness, communications, and other factors; (2) improving product and process quality; (3) developing and maintaining a skilled workforce; and (4) providing state-of-the-art technology and a safe workplace.
