GAO provided an update on its Energy, Resources, and Science issue area plan for fiscal years 1997 through 1999.

GAO plans to examine the: (1) roles and missions of energy, natural resources, and science agencies, including a consideration of alternative ways to more effectively accomplish their goals and objectives; (2) opportunities to increase revenues or achieve economies and efficiencies through better management practices; (3) safety, security, and environmental implications of nuclear weapons and nuclear power in the post-Cold War era; (4) government's responsibilities to maintain an appropriate balance between conserving the nation's natural resources and promoting their productive use while providing public access; and (5) results and effects of federal investments in science and technology.
