In response to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Immigration and Naturalization Service's (INS) activities to: (1) investigate, apprehend, detain, and deport criminal aliens in the New York City area; and (2) prevent them from reentering the country.

In response to this recommendation, the Justice Department stated that a system has been developed to ensure that the appropriate forms are being completed. On a monthly basis, the number of entries into the system for detecting deported aliens attempting to reenter the country will be compared with the number of aliens deported to detect reporting problems.

INS reported that: (1) a telegram to its district and regional offices reiterated the requirement that a deportation form be completed for each alien ordered deported and completed forms be forwarded for input into CIS; and (2) its central office is monitoring compliance with this directive.
