GAO presented its issue area plan for information management and technology. The plan's goals include: (1) examining the effectiveness of oversight of agencies' information management activities; (2) assessing agencies' acquisition and management of computer and telecommunications resources; and (3) promoting more efficient, effective, and economical use of information technology. The plan will specifically focus on the effectiveness and adequacy of: (1) central agencies' governmentwide information resources management functions; (2) the Department of Defense's (DOD) acquisition of automated information systems; (3) DOD and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's development and operation of information technologies for military and civilian needs in space; (4) the Internal Revenue Service's planning, acquisition, and use of information processing resources; (5) the Social Security Administration's management of its information resources; (6) DOD and the Veterans Administration's acquisition of automated medical information systems; and (7) the Federal Aviation Administration's planned information and communications systems.
