Follow-up reviews were performed on recommendations contained in GAO reports dealing with subjects covered by the National Academy of Sciences in its June 12, 1977, report on health care for veterans. Reports dealt with: (1) Veterans Administration (VA) contracts with architect-engineering firms; (2) methodology used by VA to determine bed size and the complement of new and replacement hospitals; (3) recruiting and retaining federal physicians, dentists, and health care workers; (4) the use of outpatient services; (5) the use of spinal cord injury treatment centers; (6) management of specialized medical services; (7) programs at alcohol treatment units; (8) pharmacy systems and procedures; (9) automated clinical laboratories; (10) open heart surgery centers; (11) cardiac catheterization laboratories; (12) control of use of psychotherapeutic drugs; (13) management of the domiciliary program; and (14) the transfer of surplus hospital land.
